French Dip with Gluten Free Au Jus

The search for gluten free Au Jus...

Growing up, we would have French Dip sandwiches as a regular rotation for dinner. The sandwich was great but dipping it into that delicious, salty broth made them irresistible. Since going gluten free, I’ve had to give a lot of things up and do a lot of modifications. There are many gluten free products out there but I could not find a gluten free Au Jus mix for the life of me. We used to just buy those cheap, little dry packets, add water and voila! I looked high and low, specialty shops, online, nothing! Some people suggested just using beef broth, some suggested adding soy sauce (What?!?! This isn’t chinese food!). However, they were on to something. I tried tamari (which is naturally gluten free soy sauce) and it just wasn’t quite the right taste. Something was off. After a bit of experimentation, I found that the tamari gave it the salty taste but there needed to be a tad bit of something sweet and tangy. That’s where the Worcestershire sauce came in. That was the perfect combo.

A very easy sandwich to prepare...

The rest is relatively simple. Make the sauce, dip the roast beef right in to warm it up. Pile the meat on your heated baguette, add sauteed veggies of your choice, dip and enjoy!
